Francisco fights heart out but loses title against Thai

Date Posted: 01 May 2011     31 Comments

Phetchaburi, Thailand – Drian Francisco fought with all his heart but the sturdy challenger from Thailand pulled through with a victory.

Tepparioth Singwancha moved up to the super flyweight division for the sole purpose of facing Francisco. It was evident early on that the Thai studied Francisco very well. Instead of backing off when Francisco attacks him, Singwancha would duck under, which would make Francisco miss with his left hooks.

Francisco started the fight well, keeping the Thai away from him but he got careless and was dropped in the third round. Francisco bounced back quickly in the nest few rounds and was leading in two of the judges’ scorecards going into the ninth round.

The judges then scored the ninth, tenth, and eleventh rounds for the Thai. Two of the judges also gave the last round to Singwancha. While the 114-113 scores were acceptable, the 117-111 card was clearly a hometown decision.

Francisco’s team also cannot believe that the judges did not give them credit for the latter rounds. “It was a really close fight but the fact that the judges did not score the last rounds for Francisco is questionable,” said Elmer Anuran, Francisco’s manager.

This was clearly a trap fight for Francisco. He was going up an unknown opponent in his hometown. The fact that a July fight against WBA super flyweight champion Hugo Cazares has been mentioned may have also affected his focus in this fight.

Francisco should learn from this fight and buckle down to work as soon as his body recovers. He must remember that Manny Pacquiao also lost his title when he tried to defend it in Thailand. Francisco was not beaten up or anything. He just had the wrong gameplan to attack the weaknesses of the Thai fighter.

Francisco tried to use his advantage in height and length and boxed from the outside. The problem was that he positioned himself too far to be effective. He and his team knew that Singwancha only knew one way of fighting and that was charging straight. Francisco chose to back down and fight from the outside rather than mixing it up with the Thai.

With the loss, the fight against Cazares is now out of the equation. He and his team must now plan what their next steps will be. They will need to decide if Francisco can still be effective at 115 or if it’s time to move up to 118.

Francisco fought his heart out. Too bad for him, Singwancha did not back down. He rose to the challenge and fought back with all he had.

As the belt was wrapped around his body, Singwancha was reduced to tears. Francisco, the gallant fighter that he is, congratulated him and walked away from the ring.

The first loss always stings the hardest but it is here when men are separated from the boys. This loss is a chance for Francisco to show that he can rise above trials. This loss will hurt for a while but if he takes it the correct way, he’ll be a better fighter the next time he fights.

Another mismanaged prospect! This kid is a very good fighter but feeding him to the wolves in Thailand where there are no guarantees as to whether you are going to have an even playing field. Did they check the hand wraps of this singwancha? did they check his urine after the fight and not just send in a sample of tap water? Francisco was the defending champion and he had to go to Thailand! The managers of Francisco must have had gotten a big bonus( none of which probably went to Francisco) to agree to fight in Tai land. Francisco is a major talent, I've seen him fight! He should now first get rid of his current managers who don't seem to be looking out for his best interest by putting him in a situation where he lost the most important credential he had, being a "world champion".

hold your horses there man. Easy with the accusations. I was there. I saw it happen and I know most of the things that went on. Drian Francisco knew exactly how much he was going to make. He was booked for a fight to Thailand because his manager wanted him to get a tuneup before Cazares. Drian was not fed to the wolves. Tepparith was a good fighter but he is not by any means head and shoulders better than Drian. It is best not to point fingers. Drian's team is by no means perfect but they all were working for his best interest.

A case of another Pacquiao wannabe or another overhyped pinoy pug? In any case, after Pacquiao retires these will be quite common again, the losing i mean.

Tamburyo May 2, 2011 03:57 AM

His not a Paquiao wannabe. He's creating his own name in the industry. What's wrong with losing? Its part of the game. Orlando Salido, having 9 loss but able to stop with TKO the feared Juanma Lopez. What do you mean pug? I think that's a low blow. He's just doing his job. And we're just watching for our entertainment.

well this guy is an excellent fighter without proper training and conditioning. his manager / promoter should get him a competent trainer or get him into a good program. otherwise MEDIORITY as always gives MEDIOCRE result!!!!!

Drian won't know the difference between losing and winning until he has experienced both. Having his first loss will be enlightening not only to his fighting spirit but also in his pursuit to greatness in the sport. Being undefeated just means he has not put himself to the test. The loss is a gain in respect if he takes it correctly and meaningfully.

and this is the same guy everyone said current champion of mexico, hugo cazares was supposedly "ducking"? cazares would have KO'd this absolute bum.

tamburyo May 2, 2011 03:36 AM

Of course Cazarez can knock out anyone of his own size and of course Drian can knock him out too. Drian is not a bum. Try to watch his fight against Vasquez, Nuñez, and Duangpetch Kokietgym.

and did i mention that mexico crowned another three world champions last night? mexico now has 15 current mexican-born world champions plus two mexican-american world champions for a total of 17. also, raul garcia of mexico, successfully defended his WBO minimumweight title by destroying filipino Rommel Asenjo via 3rd round TKO. and the domination continues!!!

Congrats to your nation if you are Mexican. Shame on you if you are Filipino. What do you want if you're not either?

How did Fransisco train? How long? Who is his trainer? Is the trainer really qualified to train? Would Pacquiao have gone this far if Buboy alone trained him? Would he have developed into the fighter he is today if not for Roach who is a real, bonafide trainer.

... di cguro basehan na kpag natalo ka ei di ka na magaling... bka di mo pa napanood ung pagkatalo ni pacquiao sa kapwa pinoy, nasuntok sa sikmura, knock out na... if you compare drian to manny... i think drian is the "one"... WHY? drian start his carrer since elementary at naipagsasabay nya ang pag-aaral sa hilig nya sa boxing... take note, commerce graduate yan, bago p yan nagbigay ng karangalan s ating bansa, ei sa eskwelahan muna yan nag-ambag ng maraming karangalan, nagawa b ng ibang boksingero yan? DRIAN is not a perfect boxer but a "complete boxer"... (depende na nga lang sa kanyang paligid)

Tamburyo May 2, 2011 03:23 AM

Why not move on and learn from mistake? Why point your finger? Do you have any idea how Drian trained? Are you with him? How would you define a qualified trainer? Kailangan ba mala-Freddy Roach agad?

I just watched some of the rounds in this fight via sports TV5 at Ch 13 to include third round knockdown. Drian still needs to fine tune his defense and offense. He underestimate this opponent.

The difficult part is that Francisco really had no choice but to fight in Thailand. The money the Thais offered him was nowhere close to what he could have earned if he fought in the Philippines. The problem is that all the advertisers are saving their money for Pacquiao because of the number of the viewers that Pacman gets. Very few want to spend their money to sponsor boxers not named Manny Pacquiao.

yah, i agree with bernard! drian cud have won the fight if it was staged here! the reason? money! money! money! lack of support! that has always been the story of our boxers, losing to abroad via home town decision because our government lacks support! and tamburyo is right, thats drians style and technic..

Sayang.

I've seen Drian's previous fights and i saw his poor defense. He has a habit of putting way down his left hand.

Reply
harley May 2, 2011 10:02 PM

Wala talagang perpekto. Hindi maiiwasan ang aksidente. Kahit ang magaling minamalas. Hindi palaging nananalo ang magaling. (Mangangaral 9:11)
